Resumo

This experiment was conducted at Universidade Rural do Estado de Minas Gerais, Vigosa, in a loamy, acid and low fertility soil. The purposewas to study the influence of frequency of cutting upon the yield and chemical composition of three varieties of elephantgrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.).

The intervals of cutting studied were 28, 56 and 84 days.

Data are presented on dry matter, crude protein and cellulose content and the herbage yield as expressed in terms of kilos of dry matter and crude protein, per hectare.

The elephantgrass varieties cut at 28 day intervals had a higher crudeprotein and a lower cellulose content compared to the 56 and 84 day cuttings. However, the 28 day interval cutting resulted in the lowest herbage yield and this frequency of cutting also reduced the stand, The clipping of elephantgrass at 84 day intervals was apparently the most desirable when considering herbage yield and vigor, even though the forage produced was relatively low in protein and high in cellulose, Theaverage crude proteinand cellulose content of the varieties of elephantgrass when cut at the ages of 28, 56 and 84 days were: 20.4 and 28.0%, 14. 2and 31.8%and 9.3 and 37.1%, respectively.
