Silagem de capim-elefante e feno de leguminosa como fontes de energia e de proteína, para novilhos zebus em confinamento

Forty-eight 19 months old zebu steers with average weight of 307 kg, were used in a dry-lot feeding to study the value of elephantgrass silage and a mixed siratro-perenial soybean hay as sources of energy and crude protein. The following 4 rations were compared: 1 - 14 kg of elephantgrass silage + 3 kg of mixed legume hay; II - 20 kg elephantgrass silage + 4 kg ground ear corn with husks; III - 10 kg silage + 3 kg hay + 4 kg ground ear corn with husks, and IV - 14 kg silage + 5,2 kg grain (87% ground ear corn + 13 ground soybean seed).
The silage and the hay were offered to the animals in separate bins, in several daily portions until completing the desired levels; their residues were weighed back daily, in the morning, so as to allow for recording feed intake. The ground ear corn and its mixture with ground soybean seed, offered in mixture with the silage, were completely consumed as the steers licked them out of this roughage.
All animals were offered water, salt and bone meal, ad Libis, at all time. The experimental period lasted for 74 ays.
The elephantgrass silage was not consumed at the planned rates whereby the observed intakes of crude protein and TDN were below the desired levels. The silage and hay fed steers lost 30 g daily/head while an average daily gain of 501 g/ steer was observed from ration III. Because of the high coeficient of variation observed (CV = 46%) there was no difference (P > 0,05) between the daily gain of 501 g/steer from ration III and the daily goin of 306 g/steer from ration II or 635 g/steer from ration IV.
