Resumo

An experiment was carried out atthe Federal University of Viçosa, to establish the growth curve of elephantgrass (Taiwan A-146) and to study the changes in nutritive value of the grass and the vigor of the regrowth when harvested at various ages. Harvests were made at 28, 56, 84, 112, 140, 168 and 196 days of age after a general cutting taken onJanuary 15, 1969. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design having 5 replications.

The growth curve was expressed as drymatter (kg/ha). The nutritive value was evaluated in terms of crude protein, cellulose, drymatter and soluble carbohydrates. Also, "in vitro" drymatter and cellulose digestibility coeficients were determined.

The experimental results showed that elephantgrasshas a fast initial growth and an early stem elongation which was evident by the total removal of the growing points when cut at 56 days of age. Due to this the age of cutting had a marked effect on the regrowth of the grass. The maximum vigor of the regowth was observed after the harvest made at 28 days of age. The growth curve established for the grass, slightly resembling a sigmoid curve, could be represented by the regression equation =-5,319.9 + 231,1 X - 0.6 X2, where: ¥ = drymatter in kg/ha and X = days of age.

The nutritive value of the grass showed a sharp drop from 28 to 56 days ofage, declining less markedly after 56 days of age.

As a compromise between yield and nutritive value it can be concluded that elephantgrass should be harvested at a height of 1,7 m.
