Resumo

In the present paper the anatomic development of several cultivars of garlic was studied from planting to harvesting. The
cultivars were classified according to the differences in growth and development. Thus, Branco de Capim Branco, Amarante and Branco Mineiro were classified as early and Barbado do Rio Grande as late. There is a difference of one half months between the early and the late with regard to the beginning of clove formation and two to three months with regard to the harvesting.

The author divided the cycle of development of garlic into three well defined stages. The first from germination to complet assimilation or disappearance of the storage leaf. The second corresponding to the renovation of new foliage leaves. The third, from development of the cloves or bulb formation to complete maturity and harvesting. The relation among the stages was analyzed and the following was found: 1:2,5:2,5 Thus, for the early cultivars the first stage would be about 20 days. the second would be 2,5 x 20 = 50 days, and the third would be 2,5 x 20 = 50 days. The total cycle would be 20 + 50 + + 50 = 120 days. Thus, if the first period were 30 days the to- tal cycle would be 30 + 75 + 75 = 180 days. This would not be a rigid determination, since it is likely that other factors like variety, beginning of planting (photo and thermo periodicity), and place, among others, would alter in part the relation. However, the knowledge would allow the use of better technique of qualitative and quantitative fertilization (perhaps level of fertilization should vary with the cycle) and irrigation for economic production.
