Resumo

Three experiments, involving 63 weaning pigs and 32 pigs from 4 to 5 months of age (average live weight of 55 kg), were conducted to evaluate the nutritive value of opaque-2 corn in growing and finishing rations for swine.

Experiment I was conducted at Goiânia with growing pigs and had the following treatments; (1) - opaque-2 corn, (2) - normal corn and (3) - normal corn plus soybean meal (isoni- trogenous with treatment I). Experiment II, also with growing pigs, was conducted at Vigosa using the same 3 treatments as Experiment I plus another treatment (4) of a balanced ration (16. 7% protein). Experiment Ill was also conducted at Viçosa with finishing pigs and also had the same 3 treatments as Experiment I plus another treatment (4) of a balanced ration (12.6% protein), All experimental rations were designed to contain equal quantities of vitamins, minerals and antibiotics.

For growing swine the results showed that opaque-~2 corn, because of its higher levels of protein, lysine and tryptophan, was superior to normal corn and normal corn plus soybean meal in terms of daily gain feed intake and feed conversion.

For finishing swine the opaque-2 corn was superior to normal corn and normal corn plus soybean meal in terms of daily gain and feed conversion, but the daily feed intake was similar.

For growing pigs the opaque-2 corn was less efficient than a balanced ration with 16.7% protein, but for finishing pigs the opaque-2 corn was as efficient as the balanced ration with 12. 6% protein.
