Sulfato de cobre como estimulante do crescimento de leitões após a dasmama

Sixty growing pigs (36 Duroc-Jersey and 24 crossed Duroc x Wessex-Saddleback) weigthing about 12,24 kg with 60 to 75 days of age were used at the Federal University of Viçosa to study the effect of levels of copper on the performance of the animals, carcass qualities and levels of liver copper for growing finishing pigs.
A basal ration composed of ground corn, soybean meal, cal- cium and phosphorus suplements, trace minerals and vitamins was used. The following treatments were studied: 1- basal ration with 10 ppm of copper; 2 - to the basal ration was added 80 ppm of copper; 3 - to the basal ration was added 160 ppm of copper; 4 - to the basal ration was added 240 ppm of copper; 5 - basal ration’ + 0,1% of antibiotic. The protein levels of the rations were 167 for growing animals and 137% for finishing animals.
There was no effect either of supplementary copper or anti-biotic on the weight gain, food consumption, feed efficiency and number of days to gain 1 kg of live weight for both grow- ing and finishing pigs.
The supplementary copper adition significantly increased (P < 0,05) the dressing percentage and reduced the backfat thickness. The level of copper in the liver was also increased. There was no effect on the meat cuts, loin eye and carcass lenght.
