The objective of this paper, which focused its attention on the municipios of Medina, Itaobim, and Comercinho in the Médio Jequitinhonha, was determine these factors which constitute obstacles to the development of cooperatives in the area.

The following hypothesis was formulated: 1. Several factors are associated with the "receptivity to cooperatives" by individuals. The factors are: a. number of years of schooling b. level of living c. exposure to communication d. contact with formal organizations and services e. informal social participation f. age g. net cash income h. size of the enterprise i. sale value of the enterprise j. volume of business In order to obtain data for quantifying the variables to test the hypothesis, information was obtained by means of a prepared questionnaire, Before the correlation analysis was made, in which the Kendall Rank Correlation Coefficient and Partial Rank Correlation were computed, a Scalogram Analysis was made to de- termine the scalability of the information used to measure the variables. The main factors identified as constituting obstacles to the development of cooperatives in the area were: 1. Alow level of schooling and a relatively highaverage age of the farmers in the area. 2. The lack of social contact among individuals and exposure to communication. It was concluded that the elimination of these Conditions, where it possible, would favor the receptivity to cooperatives by the rural inhabitants of the region.
