Relação entre peso relativo de sementes e teores de proteína e lisina no milho opaco-2

Resumo

A study was made of the Fp generation of diallel crosses between different classes of relative weight of seeds of the corn variety 'Maya 50'. The influence of these various weights were analyzed using the Fj of the crosses and their reciprocals. Characteristics studied were percent protein and percent lysine in both the endosperm and the germ, and the ratio of lysine to protein in the endosperm.

In nome of the above characteristics was any important difference found between crosses and their reciprocals.

A negative association was observed between relative weight of seed of opaque-2 and its percent of protein, as well as lysine in the endosperm. There was a tendency for seed of greater relative weight to have a lower level of protein and lysine in the endosperm. These data suggest a possible problem in selecting opaque corn of greater relative weight.

No relationship was found between relative weight of opaque seed and protein or lysine level in the germ.

The opaque seeds had lower levels of protein in the endosperm and higher levels of protein in the germ than normal seeds on the same ears.

The opaque seeds had in their endosperms 81% more lysine in the protein than did normal seeds.

In the endosperm of the opaque seeds the lysine as percent of protein was always greater than that of normal endosperm indicating a superior quality of protein in the endosperm of opaque-2 seed.
