Percent protein, lysine and lysine/protein ratio were studied as a function of kernel position on ears of opaque-2 corn. There was no consistent relationship between kernel position and percent protein, lysine or lysine as percent of protein for opaque-2 hybrid, variety and inbreds. There was a tendency for kernels in the tip position to have more protein than those in the base or middle positions, but these kernels have a higher percentage of germ, and the germ has a higher percentage of protein than does the endosperm There was no genotype x kernel position interaction for any of the analysed characteristics.
