Excedente de mercado de milho: um estudo de caso em Minas Gerais

Not much is known about the absolute or relative levels of the marketable surplus of agriculture products in Brazil. The series available refers to total harvested production or total available production. Meanwhile, policies that have an incentive or restrictive affect to production through producer reactions to variations in product price have in view, explicitly or implicitly, the marketable surplus not the total production.
The present study had the following specific objectives: a) estimate marketable surplus of com in absolute and relative terms; b) estimate the effect of the level of total production on the marketable swplus of corn; c) derive structural relations of supply (price elasticity) of markétable surplus of com in selected areas of the state of Minas Gerais.
The data were obtained from a questionnaire used in the municipios of Patos de Minas and Ituiutaba.
The following relations were estimated: elasticity of sales in relation to total production of corn; proportional margin of sales in relation to total corn production and to price elasticity of the marketable surplus, which explains the relation between sales of corn and the real price of corn. The estimated relations were adjusted by the orthodox minimum least squares method.
The results and the principal conclusions showed that the marketable surplus expressed in relative terms is slightly superior in Patos de Minas (85% when compared with Ituiutaba 79%). This difference suggests that the com producers in Patos de Minas are more oriented to marketing than the producers in Ituiutaba. The marginal propensity of corn sales in relation to total production is around 0.82 for the two municipios combined. This suggests that or an increase of production of 1,000 sacks the marketable surplus increases by about 820 sacks.
The elasticity of sales in relation to production of corn indicates that for the two municipios together an increase of 10% in production would result in an increase in the marketable surplus of about 6.7%. The minimum value of the estimated price elasticity of the marketablesurplusof corn in Patos de Minas and Ituiutaba is about 0.17. This indicates that for a variation of 10% in the price of corn there is expected to be a variation in sales in the same direction of about 1.7% for these two municipios.
