A field experiment was carried out during the 1974-75 planting season in Viçosa, Minas Gerais, to study three methods of planting maize and dry beans: (a) planting both crops as monocultures, (b) intercropping in the same rows, and (c) planting in paired rows of maize alternated with four rows of dry beans.
The dry bean plant populations were 133,333, 133,333 and 200,000 plants/ha for the altefnated four-row planting, the intercropping planting and the monoculture, respectively. Maize populations of 30,000 and 60,000 plants/ha were used at inter-row spacings of 0.5 and 1.00 m.
Intercropping and alternated rows were the most economically productive practices, independent of the differences analyzed in the price of beans and maize.
Highest grain yields of mayze were obtained by planting mayze alone, at both row spacings, and planting maize intercropped with dry beans in the same rows at the density of 60,000 plants/ha of maize.
The number of ears per unit of area was the most important yield component influenced maize plant population.
Narrowing inter-row spacing in the maize monoculture treatments, independent of plant populations, did not cause any change in grain yield.
The plantings with alternated rows of maize and dry beans were more efficient in maize production, when production per unit of area of the portion planted with maize (1/3 of the area) was compared with yields for equivalent areas of maize monoculture and intercrop plantings.
