Efeito da suplementação da vitamina A, sôbre o desenvolvimento e produção de leite de novilhas

The experiment was conducted during 444 days at the Universidade Federal de Viçosa with 20 Holstein-Zebu crossbred heifers. The heifers averaged 14 months of age and 256 kilos in weight at the beginning of the experiment.
The heifers were randdomly distributed to two treatments, One treatment received 12 cm3 of injectable vitamin A at the beginning of the experiment and at succeeding 5 month intervals. The other treatment was the control. Measurements of height at winthers, heart girth and body weight were taken every 28 days. Three animals were accidentaly electrocated and one animal had on abnormal lactation, therefore, only 16 animals were used for data on milk production.
Average gains respectively for live weigh heart girth, and height at winthers were 192. 4 kg. , 32. 4cm. and 16.0 cm. without vitamin A and 190. 2 kg., 32.9 cm. and 16.6 cm. with vitamin A.
No significant difference between treatments was noted for any of these traits. Average milk production and days in milk of the 16 cows which completed one lactation was 1553.7 kg. in 232.5 days without vitamin A and 1848.2 kg. in 247.8 days with vitamin A. This was not a significant difference.
