In an experiment conducted at UREMG, 11 species and varieties of tropical forage grasses are being evaluated for-potential productivity and response to fertilizers. Stage of cutting was based on the phenology of the grass, usually at the seed-emergence stage. Yields in green forage per cutting, during the 1964-65 summer season varied from 7 metric tons/ha for Axonopus scoparius to 78 metric tons/ha for Porto Rico 534, a variety of Pennisetum purpureum. Setaria sphacelata, a species new to this region and having desirable vegetative characteristics, yielded 40 tons of green forage per hectare.
Within the varieties of P. purpurcum, Porto Rico showed statistically significant lower green forage yield than the others (P < 0,05).
Tripsacum fasciculatum, yielded 63 and 10, 6 metric tons/ha of green and dry forage, respectively, and acceptability to animals was high. Digitaria decumbens and Panicum purpurascens gave dry-matter yields of 7.9 and 8.6 metric tons/ha/cutting, respectively, which were comparable with dry matter production of most varieties of P. purpureum. A rough estimate of acceptability animals was taken.
During the passed year, which was unusually rainy, the response to fertilizer application of 150 kg of Ammonium Sulphate, 50 kg of Potasium Choloride, 200 kg of Triple Superphosphate,14 kg of Zinc Sulphate and 20kg of Borax per hectare, was statistically significant (P < 0,05) for the first cutting but not for the second.
