Resumo

In order to obtain information on the effects of cutting height, date and interval, on the development and carbohydrate contents of the roots of molassesgrass, Melinis minutiflora Beauv, this study was conducted in pots in a greenhouse at the Rural University of Minas Gerais, Viçosa, Brazil,

The experimental design was a 3 x 2 x 3 factorial ina randomized complete block design with six replications. Three heights of cutting (2, 12, and 22 cm), two cutting intervals (4 and 8 weeks) and three dates of initial cutting were studied. Root dry matter weight and soluble carbohydrate content of the roots were determined after an experimental period of 11 months.

Under the conditions of this experiment the height of cutting showed a highly significant effect on the total production of root dry matter, The cutting interval also affected the weight of the roots.

Greatest root dry matter production and soluble carbohydrate content were obtained when the grass was cut at the height of 22 cm.
