Resumo

This work was conducted at the Federal University of Viçosa to study the total digestible nutrients, digestible energy and the caloric
value of the total digestible nutrients of perennial soybean hay (Glycine javanica L.) at 60, 108 and 157 days of age.

Digestibility trials with sheep were run for the determination of the total digestible nutrients. The bomb calorimeter was used for the determination of energy.

The hay was partially cured at the sun and transferred to an open shed where curing was completed. The hay was then coarsely cut and stored in cloth bags.

The hay was fed to sheep by a system where new quantities were fed only after the preceeding feed had been consumed.

The results permit the following conclusions:

1. In contrast to tropical grass forages, the nutritive value of the perennial soybean hay did not decrease greatly from 60 to 157 days of age.

2. With increasing maturity of the perennial soybean plants, the following observation were made:

a) The level od crude protein decreased from 16.45 to 15.44 to 14.10% and the level of crude fiber increased from 37.68 to 37.71 to 38. 85% for the ages respectively.

b) The digestibility of the nutrients decreased with the vege- tative development of the plants. The digestibility of the dry matter, crude protein and crude fiber were 56.86, 61,08 and 48.74%, respectively at 60 days old, decreasing to 52.81, 53.05 and 43.62% at 108 days and again decreasing to 50.91, 58.60 and 39.58% at 157 days.

c) The total digestible nutrients decreased for the three stages of vegetative development from 53. 87 to 50.67 to 48. 54, respectively .

d) The digestibility of the energy decreased for the three stages of development from 54.60 to 50.71 to 49.51%, respectively.

e) The digestible energy decreased for the three stages of development from 2.491 to 2.294 to 2.244 Kcal/kg DM, respectively.

3) The values obtained forthe digestible dry matter were very similar to the value obtained for the total digestible nutrients.
