"UFV-1" is a new, high yielding, lodging resistant soybean variety for central Brasil. It originated from a single plant, presumably a mutant, selected in the variety "Viçoja". It has purple flowers, light brown pubescence, yellow seed, grayish- brown hilum, and determinate growth similar to "Viçoja", but it is 25 cm taller and 14 days later in maturity. The seed is smaller than that of "Viçoja", 14.4 compared to 18.6 gms/100 seeds, and of excellent quality. "UFV-1" is resistant to bacterial pustule, wildfire, and tobacco ringspot virus, and has a low incidence of purple seed stain. Yield of "UFV-1" averaged 10% higher than "Viçoja", 124 higher than "Santa Rosa", 18% higher than "Mineira" 34% higher than "IAC-2", and 50% higher than "Pelicano" in 9 tests in Minas Gerais.
