The effect of supplementing sorghum silage with concentrate containing different levels of crude protein was studied using 24 sheep mantained in metabolism cages in a randomized design. Dry matter intake, apparent digestibility and nitrogen retention were measured using conventional methods. Silage was offered with or with out one of the following supplements: ground ear corn, or a concentrate mixture containing 10; 15; 20 or 25% crude protein. The concentrate mixtures were prepared with ground ear corn and soybean oil meal.
Results indicated that dry matter intake was significantly higher (P < 0,05) when the silage was supplemented with concentrate containing 15% crude protein. This treatment also resulted in the highest nitrogen balance (P < 0,05), probably because of the best equilibrium between nitrogen and energy of the ration.
