Resumo

The objectives of the present study were: a) to estimate the supply of peanuts in the short and long run, in the state of Sao Paulo; b) identify some of the most important variables that affect the supply of peanuts in the state of São Paulo; c) estimate the short and long run elasticities of these variables; and d) estimate the coeficient of adjustment of production.

The data refer to a time series of relative prices in the period 1948 to 1970.

The methodology used involved the fitting of alternative statistical supply models, through the ortodox method of -Least Minimum Squares~, utilizing a laggegl variable of production, price of peanuts, price of soybeans and a time variable.

The principle results were: the price elasticity of supply of peanuts was 1.14 and the cross elasticity was -0.95. The coeficient of ajustment was about 0.50. The long run price elasticity was 2.28.

The following conclusion can be drawn from this study: the supply of peanuts is responsive to price variations in the short run and very responsive in the long run. Soybeans significantly affect the production of peanuts and could replace this crop in the state of São Paulo if the internal and external demand of soybeans continues its present trend.
