Armazenamento de cereais no Espírito Santo: períodos viáveis e retornos

Agricultural production is characterized by instability resulting from biological climatic conditions and seasonal variations which create difficulty for agricultural management.

he sales of agricultural products at the time of harvest is widely practiced in the State of Espírito Santo. Few producers store their production for sale at a later date.

The purpose of this study was: (a) to estimate the period of storage for corn, rice, and kidney beans that would be economically feasible, (b) to estimate the returns yielded from storage.

The basic data used were the medium prices received for the products from monthly information of the Brazilian Agricultural Extension Service (Empresa de Assistência Técnica e Extensão Rural do Estado do Espírito Santo) and storage costs provided by the state storage facility (Companhia de Armazéns e Silos do Espírito Santo — CASES) for the periodo 1973-1975.

The economically viable periods for the stored products were estimated using the medium prices received (examined on a monthly basis) by the producers and by the storage cost. The returns to resources employed for storage were estimated by the internal rate of return for storage.

The estimated viable storage periods were: ten months (March to December) for rice; eleven months (April to February) for corn; and nearly the entire year for kidney beans.

The results provided evidence of the profitability of storing these products. The internal rates of return for storage were the following:

Corn 110.6%

Rice 56.9%

Kidney beans 125.7%
