Abstract

Cauliflower planted in loam soil, with pH ranging from 5.5, to 6.0, showed a browning of the head which was attributed to boron defliciency.

The authors conducted three field experiments using borax (sodium tetraborate) in order to try the control of the disease. The borax was applied both in solution and in powder form, at 5, 10 and 20 kg/ha. The control plots had no boron and received the same amount of fertilizer mixture used for all plots. Whenever the boron supply was made in form of a solution, it was applied to the field after the fertilization and just before the transplanting. The powder form was applied by mixing the borax in the fertilizer mixture.

Both methods of boron supply gave satisfactory results. The use of 20 kg/ha of borax was considered the best freatment because it showed only 5.5 percent of diseased plants, and yielded from 30 to 36 percent more than the control. The decrease of boron supply to 10 and 5 kg/ha produced respectively 27 and 76 percent of abnormal plants.
