An 18 day trial was run with 294 male Hubbard broiler chicks to investigate the effects of substitution of high-tannin and low-tannin sorghums for maize in broiler feeds. The experiment was carried out at the Federal University of Viçosa, Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The birds were fed ad libitum diets of maize with low-tannin sorghum grain (0.57% tannin equivalent (TE) or with a mixture of four high-tannin sorghum grains (2.28% TE). The high-tannin and low-tannin sorghums replaced 50, 75 and 100% of the maize by weight in diets with suboptimal (16.2%) and optimal (24.4%) protein levels.
