Nota sobre o efeito do armazenamento e retirada das folhas basais das mudas sobre o ciclo de produção e peso médio dos frutos de abacaxi (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.)

The objetives of this study were to observe the effect of storage of 35 - 45 cm pineapple slips (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr. cv. 'Pernambuco Massa Amarela') and the removal of basal leaves on fruit production and date of maturation. The planting materials were stored for 88, 66, 44, 22 and 0 days. Twenty plants were included in each plot in a randomized block design with 4 replications.
The following conclusions were drawn:
a) The 88 and 66 days storage periods gave a high percentage of plants which fruited early (63 and 46% respectively) which had no commercial value.
b) For harvested fruits weighting more than 1.1 kg, there was no significant difference between planting system (with and without basal leaves) and storage periods, time from planting to harvest or average fruit weight.
It's recommended that 35 - 45 cm pineapple slips should be stored 0 to 44 days with the basal leaves attached. The slips produce fruits, more than 95% of wich weight in excess of 1.1 kg, all of which are commercially marketable.
