Abstract

The effect of three genotypes of grain sorghum was studied in two popula- tion densities (150.000 and 250.000 plants/ha) and two cultivation systems: intercropped with bean and sole crop. The genotypes were the single hybrids BR 300, AG 1003, and CMS x S347, with the latter being replaced by G 522 DR in the dry season trial. In sole crop sorghum was planted in rows 0.8 m apart. In the intercropped sorghum rows were planted 0.4 m apart with two rows of beans alternating with two rows of sorghum. Dry bean ‘Negrito 897" in the density of 87.500 or 125.000 plants/ha was used in the dry and wet season, respectively. Grain production, agronomic characteristics, and land equivalent ratio (LER) were studied. Only sorghum crop was evaluated in the wet season trial. The sorghum double row (intercropped) arrangement had little influence on the production of grain with respect to the single row in sole crop system. Sorghum yield was not influenced by population density in any experiment. The genotype BR 300 was superior in the production of grain, in both the wet and dry seasons. Independently of genotype and plant population, yield was greater in sole crop than in the intercrop system. Dry bean decreased sorghum yield during the dry season, except for BR 300 at 250.000 plants/ha. Sorghum genotype and plant population had a similar effect on dry bean yield in the dry season. The greatest T.ER were obtained with the genotype BR 300, with values of 1.27 and 1.31 for the lesser and greater population, respectively. In conclusion, the cultivation of grain sorghum in double rows appears to be advantageous, because the space between the paired rows becomes available for intercropping with beans.
