Resumo

The cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) is a plant which blooms on the stem. Flowers emerge in there distinct regions on the stem: a) in leaf axils; b) in the axils of the branches along the entire length; c) in the middle or between prophylls of the branches.

When the flower-cluster emerge in close bunches, they may, in the course of development, merge into only one.

An inflorescence was divided, for the purposes of the study, into two parts.

The first was named the scape which has its origin in the periphery of the pith, and grows together with all of the tissues of the stem, but always maintaining its own individuality, and extends to the base of the flower-cluster, and therefore in the normal sense to the axis of the stem.

The second was named the flower-cluster, which has the form of a cone whose base is located in the periphery of the stem, and which is properly named an inflorescence since this is where the flowers are emited from.
