Observações sobre a distribuição de grãos de amido e modificações anatômicas na corola de café durante a floração

Histochemical studies showed that the starch grainsare inlarge numbers and well scattered over the mesophylland both apidermes of the petals in the dormant flower bud of coffee (Coffea arabica L). After the break of dormancy, starch grains appear to increase in size, bit a few days before anthesis, they start to decrease both in size and number, with few grains remaining at anthesis, and disappearing almost completelyas the corolla withers. Coincident with the phase of corrola swelling, which precedes anthesis by a few days, large intercellular spaces appear in the mesophyll lying against the abaxial epidermis. Both abaxial and adaxial epidermes showed slightly denser protoplasm util anthesis. The results suggest that the epidermes have an active function during the swelling phase and probably during the later anthesis phase.
