The growth of flower buds of coffee under field conditions in Viçosa, Minas Gerais (Brazil) was studiedin the year of 1967. Between 74-100 buds were collected weekly for length, dry matter and fresh weight determinations.
lower initiation took place by the end of May. By mid-July, buds had attained a length of 4-5 mm. Thereafter growth stopped. On September 14, growth resumed after a rainfall of 14.3 mm. Eleven days later (one day before anthesis), buds had reached a maximum size of 11.5 mm. The period of bud dormancy extended for about two months.
Fresh weight paralleled changes in bud length, Both remained stable from mid-July through September 14 and then, after break of dormancy, increased rapidly until blooming.
Water content of buds decreased slightly during the dormancy period, dropping from 57.2% on July 7 to 54.6% before the rainfall which broke dormancy. Following the break of dormancy there was 2 rapid increase in moisture content to a maximum value of 77. 4% at anthesis.
