Resumo

The effect of flower inducing substances and size of planting material on the earliness of flowering of the pineapple plant was studied.

Slip type planting material of the pineapple variety "Pernambuco Massa Amarela" was used.

The nine treatments applied to the two different sizes of slips were as follows: NAA at 10 ppm; NAA at 20 ppm; 2, 4- D at 5 ppm; 2, 4-D at 10 ppm; NAA at 14 ppm in a mixture with 2,4-D at 7 ppm; NAA at 8 ppm in a mixture 2, 4-D at 10 ppm; an aquaous solution of acetylene gas applied as a single and as a split application; and the control.

The solutions of the substances which induce flowering were applied only once at a rate of 50 cc per plant, while the acetylene gas solution was applied either once at a rate of 100 cc per plant or in two equal parts giving the same rate per plant.

The heights of the slips were: (1) shorter than 35 cm and (2) longer than 40 cm. The applications of the flower inducing substances were made 12. 5 months after planting. The inflorescences were counted 60 days after the application of the flower inducing substances.

For the slips shorter than 35 cm, all eight treatments, using the flower inducing substances, were equally significant when compared with the control. The percent flowering induced by these treatments varied from 75 to 100%.

For slips taller than 40 cm, there was no significant effect due to the application of the flower inducing substances.
