Resumo

None of the phases of the flowering process in coffee — induction, initiation, dormancy and dormancy release of the flower buds — is well understood. Under photoperiodically inductive short days in the tropics, other factors such as low temperatures and soil water deficits have been circunstantially associated with flower initiation in coffee. Nonetheless, the photoperiodic requirement of the coffee tree has still to be conclusively established. A drought period, which is not inhibitory to flower initiation, throws the flower buds into dormancy, and any fdactor that brings about a sudden rise of their water potential seems to break this lormancy.
